Brighton midfielder Billy Gilmour has responded to Levi Colwill’s contract news.

Levi Colwill recently said his goodbyes to Brighton via Instagram, effectively ending any speculation that he might return to the Amex Stadium this summer. The Athletic have also reported that the centre-back is set to sign a new long-term contract with Chelsea.

This news will have come as a bitter blow to Roberto De Zerbi, who harboured hopes of re-signing Colwill in this transfer window, even after bringing Igor to the club.

Colwill made a big impact whilst on loan with the Seagulls last season. The 20-year-old made 22 appearances for the club in all competitions, after making himself a regular starter in the second half of the campaign.

The England under-21 international showed a maturity in his play well beyond his years, and demonstrated a brilliant range of passing. Colwill quickly became a focal point at the back for Brighton, helping De Zerbi’s side to build up attacking moves from within their own territory. The Italian coach himself recognised how “important” the left-footer had become to his team.

Gilmour wishes Colwill well

Colwill’s Brighton team-mates will also have been aware of his quality. Whilst many will have also wanted to see him return to the club this summer, they will wish him well at Stamford Bridge.

Billy Gilmour, also formerly of Chelsea, responded to Colwill’s Instagram post with “Go smash it brother.”

If news of Colwill’s new contract is true, and Mauricio Pochettino intends to keep the player in his first team squad, then that could impact De Zerbi’s plans for what remains of the summer. It will be fascinating to see if Brighton go back into the market for yet another centre-back.
