‘If they had’: Glenn Hoddle explains what could’ve made Brighton title challengers

Brighton have stepped up their performances another level this season after what was a huge year for them in 2022-23.

A sixth place finish was achieved by Roberto De Zerbi and his talented squad despite his mid-season arrival.

However despite this being an incredible achievement, this season has started even better for the Seagulls.

Two wins from two, sees them enter the final week of August in first place in the league.

It isn’t just the wins which are impressing but the fact they’ve scored eight goals across their first two games, and easily could have scored more.

A 4-1 against Luton on the opening weekend at the Amex, followed by another 4-1 at Molineux against Wolves last Saturday.

These results have left many questioning, could Brighton be in a title challenge?

Hoddle on Brighton as a title contender

Brighton for years have thrived in xG charts regularly having an xG which is severely under converted by their forwards.

This has began to change but Glenn Hoddle believes one signing could’ve turned them into instant title contenders.

Speaking on The Kelly and Wrighty Show, Hoddle was asked his views on Brighton’s start to the season.

He spoke about how De Zerbi has brought Brighton to a new level and marvelled at the system which the Italian has implemented.

Finally he suggested the one part which if added, could see Brighton become serious title challengers.

“If Harry Kane had gone to Brighton, which never would’ve happened, where could have Brighton ended up in the league? They could be the ones challenging Man City.”

Brighton could yet find themselves in that position this season though with two brilliant performances already.
